In 1952 a small boy sat on his Grandfathers lap, it was Easter and the boy was confused by the dual events of chocolate eggs and rabbits and the story of a man being nailed to a cross and rising from the dead. The old man explained the meaning of the eggs and rabbits. Unfolding a story of the times when the people on the other side (hemisphere) of the world celebrated the time of the year when they planted crops and prepared for the coming of the next winter when they would be confined by the snow. He brought out old books and showed the boy the illustrations of the villages covered in snow. Then he went on to explain about the man known as Jesus, how he had tried to help people and how the priesthood of the time had him killed. He explained how the mans body was taken to a cave and a big rock was rolled across the entrance. And how the man had come back to life three days later. The old man brought out some more books and showed the boy illustrations of Roman soldiers nailing a man to a cross and the little boy cried at the impression he received from those illustrations. As the old man finished telling the boy of the two stories of Easter he brought out another book. "I want you to read this book one day, I want you to read it when you are old enough to understand what I am about to say". As he passed the book to the boy he said "I will tell you something now that my father told me fifty years ago, never forget it". "Our world" he said "is ruled by two groups of people, politicians and priests. Both of these groups rely on two things for their survival". He tapped his own chest "One thing is that the old people will die". Then he pointed to the boy "And the other thing is that you, the young people, will forget". The words impressed the boy, even though he did not fully understand the meaning. That was 50 years ago today. I was that little boy and the old man was my Grandfather. Three years after my Grandfather gave me the book, I heard that the man who had written it had died. Twelve years after he gave me the book, my Grandfather died. The politicians and the priests were right about one thing, the old men died. But they were wrong about the other, I have not forgotten. I will never forget you Pop. Nor have I forgotten the lesson I learned when I read the book.

The Scimitar and the Shooter.Chapter 1. Persian Gulf The group slid into the cold dark filth of the open sewer drain. Silently, almost a part of the night. Five wraiths blending into a vista of wraiths that were the night. Years of tough training, and the missions they had carried out before now, gave them the knowledge that their weapons would still function flawlessly after being immersed in mud, even so they were all very careful to keep their AK-47M assault carbines above the surface. Abdullah had already made sure the C4 plastique explosive, detonators and timers, were safely wrapped in waterproof packs, just as each of them had done with any weapons they were carrying in addition to their carbines. The filth in this drain could dissolve a car body in one week, it could render a weapon useless in moments. It had taken a great deal of courage merely to select it as the approach path to the target. The stench was over-powering and each movement lifted fresh, choking, almost tangible, clouds of vile stink up to their faces as, slowly, almost imperceptibly they closed the gap between themselves and the target. The glow from the base light towers gave more than enough light to provide contrast for their Polan night vision goggles. Many of the old fighters had scoffed at the purchase of them, but they gave the team an edge over the already bored sentries. An edge that could mean success instead of failure for the mission.............. Corporal "Ski" Goranski looked down at his legs, or rather the place where his legs had once been, he did not feel any pain. Shock was just beginning to wash over him, he looked around, to his left he saw a bloodied pile of cloth, scattered around it were body parts, he saw the MP armband and the kevlar helmet with the white band. The realisation that the bloodied pile of cloth was all that was left of his partner came to him "Hang on Stant, I'm coming with you " he said as the cold darkness of death reached his brain.
The "Scimitar and the Shooter " is set in the Middle East - it opens with an attack on a US base. The attackers make off with a load of the latest US ATGMs and SAMs. Events develop rapidly as a crack Australian Special Forces team are sent to hunt down the attackers and retrieve the missiles. They walk into a nightmare and we see the emergence of a most unlikely hero as the bonds of friendship push aside the lies and deceit of politics. Drunken ex kangaroo shooter and disgraced special forces soldier "Windy" Hill carves a path of destruction through the facade of "innocence" presented by the United States and Israel and exposes the ulterior motives behind the facade - the ulterior being world domination. The story takes us through an almost unspeakable horror as the world is drawn into a war that will forever change the way humans see their world and those in power.
Here is a novel not for the faint hearted nor the politically naive. Pure fiction - or is it? Sometimes fiction is closer to the truth than the "truth" - especially "political truth". This novel has had to be re-written several times because of the events of the past few years - the attack on the WTC and Afghanistan and the invasion of Iraq were all to close to the events written about in this book - so rather than open fresh wounds for those affected I have had to alter the story line. The basic theme skirts around these events but still focuses on the lies that were used to support the events. Keeping in mind that the theme of the novel was, and still is, a work of fiction.
