Title: "Doayo (Namchi)Bos taurus cattle with low.....Challenge"
Author (s):  Achukwi MD et al.,.

The Editor must ensure that the OJVR publishes only papers which are scientifically sound. To achieve this objective, the referees are requested to assist the Editor by making an assessment of a paper submitted for publication by:

A. What is this work about (brief description) :This study provides some evidence that Doayo cattle are genetically tripanotolerant
B. Is it innovative and why? Yes first time a detailed microsatellite markers of this breed with appropriate genetic analysis and supportive physiological parameters to support findings
C. Does it add to knowledge about this subject and why? See above.

(a)  Writing a report on the reverse side of this form,
(b} Check the boxes shown below under 1. and  2. ( YES or NO) [N.B.A "NO" assessment must be
supported by specific comment in the report.
(c)  Make a recommendation under 3.

The Editor-in-Chief would appreciate hearing from any referee who feels that he/she will be unable to review a manuscript within two weeks.

4. REPORT. This is a well written important comprehensive study of tripasomomiasis resistance in African cattle, a severe problem in that continent and other sub-tropical-tropical regions. This work will be of interest to the WHO and FAO.  It is innovative because the genetic findings were supported with relevant physiological evaluations (PCV and parasitaemia). Introduction: Relevant and properly referenced, could have put description of cattle here instead of in Methods although not essential. Material and Methods.  Issue 1: Exclusion of cattle due to excessive or few alleles is appropriate in this case because the authors were trying to show a genetic component to the resistance, so 11 v 18 ok as long as appropriate statistics were used. Issue 2: Maybe a record of weight, age etc should have been done as these parameters could influence the parasataemia (in any case I could not find any of this data). Common Zebu component shown by microsatellite analysis. The findings support the conclusion. I recommend this work be published without changes.
