Moulin Rouge
By Phoebe Avenall
O
n October 5, 1889, the Moulin Rouge
opened at the foot of Montmatre.
At once its illuminated windmill became a landmark, rotating above rooftops on the boulevard de Clichy.
A combined dance hall and cabaret, it housed a big dance floor, mirrored walls, and a fashionable gallery lit by round glass globes of gas lamps. In the garden were an outdoor stage and an enormous wooden elephant.

Masked balls were featured on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The music was a brassy accompaniment to various new forms of the can can. The most famous of the nightclub's dancers were Jane Arvil and La Goulue.
Just recently the movie "Moulin Rouge" came out and sadly we didn't see a lot of France in it but it was still a fantastic movie. It showed us what life was like inside the Moulin Rouge.

The Moulin Rouge is a famous landmark in France right to this very day and I think that it was a great idea to bring out a movie on the famous landmark and building, the Moulin Rouge.
