The Eiffel Tower was built between the 23rd of January 1887 to the 31st of March, for the Universal Exhibition and to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution. It is situated in the Champs de Mars Region in Paris, near the River Seine.

There were about 300 workers that helped with the construction. The architect was called Steven Sauvetre and the contractor was called Gustave Eiffel.

The Eiffel Tower was built by lots of different materials, like iron and glass.

The tower is 324 metres high, including the antenna. There are three levels in the tower. It weights 7000 tonnes.

The Eiffel Tower is painted every seven years. Now, it’s brown.

With more than six million visitors each year, the Eiffel Tower is the most visited monument in the world. It is known for its striking appearance.

Alexandre Gustave Eiffel was born on the 15th December 1832 in Dijon, France.
He was a successful engineer that built the Eiffel Tower.
He also helped with the interior structure of the New York Library and the Station at Toulouse.
He was involved in the Eiffel Tower because he won a competition.
He died the 27th December 1923 in his home in Paris.

The Universal Exhibition of 1889 that took place in the Champs de Mars Region, in Paris near the Seine, was a magnificent event to celebrate the achievements 100 years after the French Revolution.

The main attraction was the Eiffel Tower and there were more than 80 other attractions including the Gallery Of Machines.

A train line surrounded the Universal Exhibition and there were lots of
new inventions and modern architecture, characterised by “Art Nouveau.”
