Engineers
The engineers were a "rough around the edges" group of people. This photograph caused a lot of friction between the chief engineer and the other engineers. He wanted us to dress in full blues uniform. We wanted boiler suits. As you can see he conceded but when we saw his photograph in "The Great White Whale Goes To War" he was wearing his dressing gown. In hindsight it would have been nice to have been in uniform.

All engineers worked in pairs for the duration of the voyage. Granny and Dougie
"The diplomat" were heard to utter many expletives when bombs exploded a little
to close, shaking soot into the boiler room.
