WEL POLICY PROPOSALS FOR NEW SOUTH WALES

In putting forward this set of policy proposals, WEL NSW is conscious that many women and girls in NSW still find themselves socially and economically disadvantaged. Despite more recent initiatives, the majority of women and girls still have a long way to go.

WEL NSW has identified specific measures which the NSW Government can adopt to redress existing inequities and to give women and girls greater opportunities to operate on a level playing field with men and boys. To achieve this requires not only changes to policies and procedures, but more systemic initiatives that will produce a fairer and more equal society over time.

Our goal is gender equality, with all women and men being able to realize their full human rights and potential to contribute equally to society and to benefit equally from the results. Indigenous women need the most support from the NSW Government and WEL urges the Government to give the needs of indigenous women priority attention.

WEL NSW’s recommendations have resource implications. Our expectation is that additional staff and funds will be made available to departments and agencies to enable the implementation of our proposals.

We also believe that improvement is less likely to occur without strengthened accountability and performance measurement. We therefore recommend that gender specific and gender sensitive data be collected, monitored and published in each department and agency, along with annual review and outlook reports including budget analysis undertaken jointly by the Office for Women and the Auditor General.

Following further discussion with other women’s organisations, the policies outlined in this document may be supplemented over time.
