Yuri Kawanabe was born in Japan and has held Australian residency since 1987. She first came to Australia in 1984 soon after completing her master's degree in metal work from the National University of Fine Arts, Tokyo. She has received a number of awards including the Award of Excellence, Jewellery Art Competition, Tokyo, 1996 and the Japan Jewellery Prize, Japan Jewellery Exhibition, Tokyo, 1984. Her work is in numerous public collections including the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney; the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Launceston and the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane. She has held individual exhibitions worldwide including Brisbane City Gallery, 1999; Galerie Ra, Amsterdam, 1997; Trimetall, Cologne, 1996; and Gallery IF, Tokyo, 1993. Her work has been represented in a number of important Australian exhibitions which have travelled to Asia including Art of Adornment, 1993 and Contemporary Australian Craft, 1999. She has represented Australia on a number of occasions overseas, giving talks about her work and about Australian jewellery art in Japan several times. A trip to Bali in 1997 rekindled childhood memories of helping her father make ephemeral offerings for local religious celebrations in Tokyo and she has pursued this theme in her recent series of works.
